American kids’ favorite purple dinosaur, Barney
While I was researching early childhood education at Mills College Graduate School, I was an assistant teacher at the kindergarten attached to the College.
At the time, the television show Barney and Friends was very popular with children.
Kindergarteners had so many Barney goods, including t-shirts, towels, and underwear.

The power of the Barney phenomenon
One day, the children were making a lot of noise as they prepared to go home.
When the head teacher began to play the Barney theme song on her guitar, the children suddenly stopped their chattering and began to sing the song in unison - ♪I love you. You love me. We’re a happy family♪ At the time, this enthusiasm for Barney was called the Barney Phenomenon.

The interesting connection between children and media
I realized how media influences children’s play and daily life in many ways.
At the same time, I began to question why children became so attached to a character created by media.
So, I decided to look more closely at the relationship between media and the children of today.

Media and Information Literacy
=The ability to autonomously critically evaluate media content
and to survive in a highly informationalized society

The focus of the Komaya Media Lab is research in Media and Information Literacy (MIL).
In 2011, UNESCO called for a global concept of MIL as the ability to autonomously critically evaluate media content and to make informed decisions as users and producer of information and media content.
Until this concept was established, various literacies were separated; there was a mixture of fragmented theory and diverse practice. The global media education framework put forth by UNESCO is a composite of various concepts of media literacy and defines 12 indicators that comprise MIL.
UNESCO’s MIL Curriculum for Teachers has been implemented mainly in developing countries in Africa and Asia but is spreading worldwide.

Practical research in MIL from a human development perspective

In this wave of globalization, Komaya Media Lab is constructing a MIL Education Framework that follows developmental stages from infancy to old age.
The aim is to acquire the necessary skills as a receiver, user maker, and sender of media to separate good and bad in an information-flooded society.
Specifically, in Step 1 (Foundation – Building Resistance to the Media), by mastering the skill to use media, acquiring understanding of the characteristics of media and knowledge about the world of media, and learning about the morality of information, people will develop a critical eye for the media and nurture a personal capacity toward media.
In Step 2 (Application – Building Social Strength as a Citizen), MIL social skills are nurtured. The ability to form individual ideas, increase empathy for others, and express opinions clearly in a social group are cultivated. I am researching the acquisition of a balanced MIL involving these two steps.
